History of the Smartphone Industry
The concept of the smartphone has been around since 1973. However, the first smartphones hit the market in 1994. They started being referred to as smartphones by Ericsson in 1997 when they launched their feature GS 88 phone. In the early 2000s, Palm OS and Blackberry dominated the smart phone landscape. Then in 2007, Apple released the iPhone which revolutionized the smartphone. In 2008, Google’s android began producing software for phone companies imitating Apple. Some imitators include Samsung, Sony, LG, Huawei, ETZ, HTC, Motorola (Now owned by Google), and many other companies. Ever since 2011, smartphones known as "Phablets" have evolved. They have huge screen sizes that range from 4.5 inches to as much as 8 inches. (Original smartphone on the left)
Many new smartphone concepts have come out. Some of them include a smart watch, smart glasses, hologram producing smartphones, and many other concepts. Google has already released the Google Glass, which is a smartphone that is still in the beta phase. It costs about 2000 dollars. Google shipped a limited amount of them to people interested in them. The Google Glass has received some criticism from people. For example, when you wear Google Glass, it records everything you see no matter where you are. This is a huge privacy concern. Many people are concerned over the radiation levels of the Google Glass. People currently are advised to keep smartphones or even basic phones away from their head as much as possible. The point of the Google Glass smartphone is to wear it as glasses with the chip next to your head. That is a huge radiate concern. Also there are rumors of an Apple iWatch. As you know, Apple is extremely secretive about future plans thanks to imitating competitors. The iWatch is supposed to be another smartphone like the iPhone but in the shape of a watch. Its supposed to be a snap-on watch powered by solar energy. It is expected to have a 2.5 inch screen. What kind of proves the rumors of an Apple iWatch is the fact that over 100 engineers at Apple are working on developing it. It is guaranteed that Apple is working on several huge phone and new projects. This is known by the fact that first of all Apple's stock price has dropped recently due to increased competition and their plans to build a spaceship headquarters almost the size of the Pentagon with not a single piece of straight glass inside.
